St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 23 September 2018

You may have noticed news of very severe typhoon activity in the Phillipines in the last few weeks. You might not be aware that the Anglican church has a specific arm devoted to mission and relief in such situations. The Anglican Board of Mission is the national mission agency of the Anglican Church of Australia working with overseas and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. ABM has launched an emergency appeal in response to an urgent request from our sister church, the Episcopal Church in the Philippines. ABM is aiming to raise $100,000 to assist the Episcopal Church in the Philippines with the emergency response.

In his most recent correspondence to the diocese Bishop Peter said this in regard to the unfolding disaster:

“Four of the seven dioceses of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines (ECP) are located in the northern parts of Luzon island which have been badly affected by Super Typhoon Mangkhut which struck on Saturday 15 September. 300 parishes of the ECP, including 100 other communities that the Church has engagement with, have been affected by the typhoon in varying degrees of damage….More than 60 people have died, mostly caused by landslides in or near the Cordillera mountain region, with the number expected to rise.”

As ABM seeks to raise much needed funds to respond to this tragedy, I encourage you to pray for the crucial work of the ABM and for those affected by Typhoon Mangkhut. Our prayers are our faith put into action; our standing in solidarity with our brothers and sisters, who despite great distance, have come to know the love of a God who loves us and who knows our suffering. To keep up-to date with the latest emergency news or to donate to ABM’s Typhoon Mangkhut Emergency Appeal please call on 1300 302 663, email info@abm.asn.au or visit www.abmission.org/typhoon-mangkhut-emergency. Alternatively, you can speak with our mission secretary Angus Draffan.

Every blessing for the week to come,

Mark

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Friday 21 September 2018 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

Supporting St John’s Church

We encourage members of St John’s to support the ministry of our parish by giving directly to the parish account, rather than bringing cash to church. If you can do this, our account details are:

BSB: 705-077
A/C: 00040401
Name: St John’s Anglican Church Newcastle

Thank you to all members of our parish who are able to support ministry in this way.

KoG, The Hub and Youth

It has been another exciting term at our kids and youth programs at St John’s. We would especially like to thank all those who have volunteered to assist with meals at The Hub. The opportunity to share a meal and fellowship together, combined with the opportunity to be apart of the worship of our young people has been a great blessing and we cannot wait to finish of the year in style with our term 4 program! Please note that this Friday the 21st of September will be the last week of KoG and Youth for term 3. There will be no program next week.

Equally, there will be no school holiday program for term 3. See you in October!

Prayer

One of the really important aspects of our life as a community following the way of Jesus is prayer – both with and for each other. Our leadership team are commited to praying regularly for those in the parish with particular need and encourage all members of our church family to find space for God’s presence in this special way.

As part of this ongoing commitment we offer intentional prayer after all our services, and are commited to bringing before God anyone with particular needs when we pray during our various services of worship at St John’s. Likewise, in the daily prayers of our community we seek to regularly raise our brothers and sisters up before God through prayer.

If you would like to be prayed for in any of these ways, please let Mark or Fr. Ken know of your desire, or add your name to the prayer list located on the notice board in the chapel.

La Femme Musicale – The Newcastle Tudor Singers

On Sunday 23rd of September at 2:30pm the Newcastle Tudor Singers will present “La Femme Musicale” – Music about women, composed by women, directed by women, and arranged by women. The concert will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral. Admission $15 and Concession $10.

Next Working Bee – 20th October

A second working bee has been propsed by parish council for Saturday the 20th of October. By announcing well in advance we hope you will be able to book this date in your diary if you are able to assist with much needed painting and general work to the rectory. Please let Mark or Ken know if you are able to help on the day!

If you are unable to make it on the 20th, or would like to give in a different way, donations are also being taken for the cost of any proessional work to be undertaken. To donate either deposit directly to the St John’s account or see Mark or Ken. We hope to see you there!

Samaritans Purse Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Next Month is national collection month for the samaritans purse shoebox appeal. Each year we invite parishoners to collet a shoebox from church, fill it with gifts and return it to church to be sent to children in need. Simply pick up your shoebox, choose a boy or girl, and an age group (2-4, 5-9, or 10-14) and add your gifts. For ideas, check out www.operationchristmaschild.org.au.

Shoeboxes will be available at the rear of the church on Sunday.
