St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 29 April 2018

It was an honour to be asked to lead prayers at the Newcastle Civic Park Candlelight ANZAC Service on Tuesday of this week. This service started with a welcome by Aboriginal elder Uncle Bill Smith and contained a number of dance and musicical performances by indigenous groups. The service took place in Civic Park by the eagle sculpture created by the well-known Newcastle auctioneer Don McHattie, whose funeral I took at St John’s in October 2017. The Lord Mayor of Newcastle, and state and federal members of parliament were in attendance. It was good to see some familiar faces from St John’s among the crowd.

ANZAC Day is a time of honouring and mourning the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today. As Christians, we know what it is to honour the sacrifice of others, as we look to the great sacrifice Christ made on the Cross. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2.24). May his sacrifice inspire us to serve each other in love.

Blessings, Murray

St John’s Annual Parish Fair

The Annual Parish Fair will be held on Saturday 5 May 2018 from 9.30am-1.30pm!

Your assistance with the Fair would be very much appreciated. The Women’s Guild need help with the provision of goods for the various stalls and also help on the day.

Stalls include: Morning Tea, Raffle, Soup, Pickles and Jam, Handcraft, Books, BBQ, Trash and Treasure, pre loved toys, Sweets, Cakes, Fruit and Veg.

If you can help on any of these stalls please contact Jenny Walkom on 0419497392 or speak to any of the Guild members.

The Soup stall at the Fair needs donations of soup. Containers will be available at the back of the Church, near the welcomes table and the Guild would love you to take a bundle, make some homemade soup put it in the containers and return them to the fridge in the Hall, labelled. They can be frozen if made now or fresh if made closer to the Fair.

Books for the book stall and second hand goods for the Trash & Treasure stall can be delivered downstairs in the Hall on Thursday 3 May after 3.30pm or Friday 4 May after 9am.

Guild have Flyers that we would like to hand out to the Parishioners to help with putting these in letter boxes. One of the ministries we love to provide here at St John’s is providing parishioners with free exercise out in God’s beautiful world!
