St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 7 December 2014

Thanks for dropping in to see what’s happening at St John’s this week.

Last Sunday was the first Sunday of Advent – a time of waiting and focussing on God. To help in this special time, I hope you have been able to get a copy of the booklet ‘Community Prayers for St Johns – Advent 2014′ that was distributed last Sunday. If you haven’t got a copy yet, please pick up one from the welcomers’ table near the main door of the church.

These prayers are being broadcast on the internet at 9.30am every weekday and Saturday in Advent. To join in with these prayers, go to www.saintjohns.com.au/prayer and click on the links to see upcoming live prayers from the church or you can view the current list of previous prayers (including today’s).

If you would like to join in these prayers in church, then please come to the church by 9.20am on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. I wish you every blessing for this holy season.

Parenting Course

Thank you to everyone who took part in the parenting course. We had 11 families from St John’s register for the course and the course was held over all the Sundays of November. We’ve had really positive feedback about it and are hoping to open it to baptism families and other families with a connection to St John’s in term two of 2015. Stayed tuned for more news. Our next step will be to run the Parenting Teens course in term 1 of 2015. Please let me know if you want more information about when this will run. I do want to say a big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the course, particularly Bridie, Rade and Angus who helped Rob with childcare while parents were doing the course, and Howard and Jen who kindly provided the refreshments.

This Sunday is the Combined Churches Carols by Candlelight at 7.30pm. I look forward to seeing you there.

Blessings,

Discover Mark

From 1 December our Bible readings in church will no longer feature Matthew’s gospel as they have been doing for the last year. This month we move to a focus on the Gospel of Mark, an intriguing and focussed story of Jesus’ ministry. Find out more by coming to a Discover Mark session on Wednesday 10 December in the church hall. Rev Ken Youman will run a session 12 noon -1.30pm, including a light lunch and a session in the evening beginning at 7pm. Come and join in for a taster of what to expect as we encounter Mark’s fascinating telling of Jesus’ life.

Giving Tree

Our tree is up to-day and we have up to and including Sunday 14th December to place our gifts under it.   We need to have everything to the Samaritans in the week commencing 15th so they have time to distribute them to the appropriate recipients.  When you place your gift don’t forget to put a decoration on the tree.  Don’t know what to buy?  – some ideas for boys – football, books, games, cars, any active sport items, action figures.  For girls – dolls, books, games, doll prams, textas or craft items.  Teenage boys – gift vouchers (Target, Big W. Etc.), cricket set or other sporting equipment, beach towel, backpacks, wallets or a cap.  Teenage girls – gift vouchers, toiletries, cosmetics, beach towel, backpacks, purses or bags, hats, suitable items of jewellery. Please remember that many of the recipients can not necessarily afford battery operated items. Please do not wrap gifts.  The gifts are wrapped once they have been chosen.

Rosters for 10.45 & 5pm

If you are on the service roster for our 10.45am and 5pm services, please log in to the saintjohns.elvanto.com.au website and submit your unavailability if you will be away over Christmas or the New Year. This will help in planning our services at this busy time of year. Thank you!

World Day of Prayer

We are looking for one or two people who would be interested in joining the committee for this World-wide Annual event.  A combined Service is held each March in alternating churches in this area – 2015 will be hosted by the Baptist Tabernacle.  The committee only meets once a year to find out from the host church what their participation will be and once in every 7 years the Service will be held at St. John’s.  If you think you would be interested please see Fr. Murray.  The meeting for next year’s’ Service is Thursday 22nd January at 10am at the Baptist Tabernacle.
