St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 9 September 2018

Last Sunday was Father’s Day and it was great to be able to celebrate the important role father’s play in our lives – whether they be our own dad’s, people we look up to in our community, or even spiritual dad’s who support and strengthen us in our faith. Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for worship at our 9am, 10:45am and 5pm Messy Church Celebration.

On Father’s day I’m often reminded of the powerful story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), and how it tells us of a Father who rejoices at the return of a son who was thought to be gone forever. It’s also a reminder that we have a Father in heaven, who loves us and who is with us in His son Jesus. It is a reminder for us to be “strong and courageous” and to not be afraid, because the Lord is with us where ever we go (Joshua 1:9). This week is a great opportunity to pray for all those Dad’s known to us who do all the different and important things that Dad’s do.

Every blessing for the week to come,

Mark

Advanced notice of Gingerbread House making.

On Saturday 24th November a gingerbread house making afternoon will be held for families at St Johns. The afternoon will start at 2pm and afternoon tea will be provided. The cost of a kit is $35 and it includes all the materials, gingerbread and decorations to complete the house.

The closing date for registration will be the 13th October as the kits have to be ordered in advance. Details of pre-payment will be notified later.

A gingerbread house is a model house made from gingerbread and decorated with a variety of candies and icing. They have become a popular Christmas decoration and have been traditionally built by children and parents working together.

The origin of the gingerbread house is the Greek and Roman Empires and the custom of building houses as a Christmas activity was brought to Europe in AD 992 by the Armenian monk, later Saint Gregory of Nicopolis

Further information is available from Margret Youman on 0419 230 133.

Christmas Puddings

The Women’s Guild will be making puddings on two Mondays in October the 15th and 22nd. Helpers are needed on one or both days to make the puddings and we also need people to cook the puddings after they have been made.

Supporting St John’s Church

We encourage members of St John’s to support the ministry of our parish by giving directly to the parish account, rather than bringing cash to church. If you can do this, our account details are:

BSB: 705-077
A/C: 00040401
Name: St John’s Anglican Church Newcastle

Thank you to all members of our parish who are able to support ministry in this way.

Rectory Working Bee – Saturday 8th September

The first working bee for volunteers will be on Saturday 8th September. Howard Benson is co-ordinating activities on the day so please let him know if you are available. If you cannot participate on that day a donation to cover the costs of materials is a good alternative idea – this can be paid directly into the St Johns account.

Confirmation Reminder

Bishop Peter will be coming to St Johns for the sacrament of confirmation on Sunday 2nd December at the 9.00am service. We already have a number of young people who have decided to make this public declaration of their faith. Anyone interested in being confirmed, please let Fr Ken know. The Bishop will also perform the reception of people into the Anglican communion at this service. If you want to know more please talk to Fr Ken of Mark.

Messy Church Leadership Team

We are seeking volunteers to lead our monthly Messy Church celebration. Messy Church is an interactive and friendly space for people to create together, celebrate together and eat together. It’s an opportunity to learn about a God who loves us through all the messiness that life can bring. Be a Messy Leader would involve developing an ongoing food roster, coordinating activities and selecting theme’s for each month. Ideally we are hoping to bring together a team of about 4-5 people who can help make Messy Church everything it can be!

If you are interested in being involved please see Mark.
