This Sunday will mark the beginning of National Child Protection Week. National Child Protection Week provides an opportunity for government, business and community to come together to promote the safety and wellbeing of children. Supported by The National Association for Prevention of Child abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN), this year the focus is on ‘playing our part’ in creating safe and nurturing environments for all Australian children.
As a diocese we continue to champion the important work of protecting, supporting and hearing children. I encourage you to engage with the resources available at https://www.napcan.org.au/national-child-protection-week/ this week and help to play your part in building stronger communities, creating safer environments, and hearing the voices of all children.

An Invitation from the St John’s Women’s Guild

Prayer School Success
The APN prayer school was held on Friday night and most of saturday. There were over 30 people in attendance across the two days and some incredible examples of answered prayer were offered. A special thanks to Matthew and Cathy Bolte for leading the teaching program, and to all those who volunteered to make the event such a great time!

Rectory Working Bee
The first working bee for volunteers will be on Saturday 8th September. Howard Benson is co-ordinating activities on the day so please let him know if you are available. If you cannot participate on that day a donation to cover the costs of materials is a good alternative idea.
Confirmation
Bishop Peter will be coming to St Johns for the sacrament of confirmation on Sunday 2nd December at the 9.00am service. We already have a number of young people who have decided to make this public declaration of their faith. Anyone interested in being confirmed, please let Fr Ken know. The Bishop will also perform the reception of people into the Anglican communion at this service. If you want to know more please talk to Fr Ken of Mark.
Church Flowers
The flower arrangement I have done in the church are in memory of the 12 Anglican Martyrs of Papua New Guinea. In August 1946 at the Diocesan Synod sitting at Dogura in PNG, the Priest from Gona who had been a prisoner of the Japanese asked if the 2nd September could be a day the church remembered the 12. The first New Guinea Martyrs Day was observed on 2nd September 1948 at Gona, where the first Martyrs were working and where the Japanese landed on 21st July 1942.
The twelve Birds of Paradise represent the twelve Martyrs, the Gymea and Monstera leaves represent the spears and shields of the Papuans who died and they also represent the ancestors of Lucian Tapeidi and Leslie Gariadi who would have welcomed the first missionaries. The greenery and palms represent the jungle undergrowth where the Martyrs hid to avoid capture. The white cross a reminder of the cross with bullet holes, the only thing left standing at the Gona Mission station, after the landing of the occupying forces.
The flowers on the floor are in memory of the missionaries and religious of other denominations.
The death of these twelve was not in vain, their sacrifice inspired the church in Papua New Guinea, had they deserted much of their work would have to be started all over again.
They were faithful unto death and we honour them.
