Many thanks to Fr Ken, Rob, and all who have been doing extra to support the parish over the last few weeks!
Blessings, Murray

Parish Annual Meeting – Sunday 19 March 2017
The Annual Meeting of St John’s Church will be held on Sunday 19 March at 3.30pm. Ahead of this meeting, we will need people to stand for election for the following positions:
– two churchwardens, who have responsibility for the building and furniture of the church and who serve as the executive officers of the parish, including dealing with Work Health and Safety issues;
– a missions secretary, who deals with the support of missionary agencies (and who serves as a member of parish council); and
– five members of parish council. The first responsibility of parish council is to: assist the incumbent to lead the mission and ministry of the parish.
Because this is a diocesan election year, we also need to elect:
– three synod members, who will represent us at the annual synod meetings for the next three years, and
– three members of the parish incumbency board, and two reserve members, who work with the diocese to appoint a new Rector if needed in the next three years.
Please think carefully about the kind of people you would like to lead our mission and ministry. Our parish council is becoming a body which plans the mission and outreach of the church, and has focussed less on buildings and maintenance. We need people serving on parish council who are willing to plan, support and run the things that we believe God is calling us to.
Nomination forms will soon be available at the front door of the church. If you believe that you know people who would serve the parish well in this way, please get their agreement and nominate them… and please attend the meeting on 19 March to elect them!
Hollywood Fundraiser – 26 March 2017
St John’s invites you to put on your thinking caps and join us for a night of friendly competition at the St John’s Hollywood Trivia Night fundraiser. Form a team of six friends or come on your own and join other members of the community for a night of fun on Saturday 25th March from 6pm-8/8.30pm. Arrive from 5.30pm for a 6pm start and bring your own dinner or nibbles to dine on whilst answering questions on all areas of Hollywood movies!
Dress up as your favourite Hollywood actor from the silver screen and walk the red carpet. Cost is $15 per person and fun is guaranteed. There will be plenty of chances to win prizes on the night.
We are calling for any businesses or parishioners in the community that may be able to donate a prize for this fundraising event. If you can assist with prize donation, please contact penny@alphabetstreet.com.au or amanda.hall@newcastle.edu.au and a box will also be left up the back of the church for any suitable prizes.
Children will also be catered for with a movie and pizza night in the church whilst the parents go head to head on their Hollywood movie knowledge. Cost per child is $5.
Bookings will open soon at https://hollywoodquiz.eventbrite.com.au to purchase your tickets. Limited tickets available for the night.
Parish Fair – 6 May 2017
The Annual Parish Fair will be held on Saturday 6 May 2017 from 9am-1pm!
Your assistance with the Fair would be very much appreciated! The Women’s Guild need help with the provision of goods for the various stalls and also help on the day.
Stalls include: Morning Tea, Raffle, Soup, Pickles and Jam, Handcraft, Books, BBQ, Trash and Treasure, pre loved toys, Sweets, Cakes, Fruit and Veg.
If you can help on any of these stalls please contact Jenny Walkom on 0419497392 or speak to any of the Guild members.
Lemons are needed to make lemon butter, also small to medium glass jars with lids to put the jams or pickles in. These can be left in the Hall kitchen on the back shelf.
Trash & Treasure can be left in the Hall AFTER Sunday 30th April. This is so we don’t inconvenience other groups using the Hall.
We look forward to making this a great parish fair in 2017!
Mothering Sunday
Mothering Sunday also known as Refreshment Sunday is always observed on the 4th Sunday in Lent, this year 26th March – Mothering Sunday when people who worked away, apprentices or in domestic service returned home to visit their mother and attend “Mother Church”, Refreshment Sunday as it falls in the middle of Lent was used as break from the Lenten fast or abstinence.
St John’s has always observed this day with the blessing of a Traditional Simnel Cake, if someone from each service would like to make and donate a fruit cake that would be blessed and then enjoyed by others at their service
Mothering Sunday is observed in some countries as Mother’s Day i.e England, and it is a time to give thanks for their Mother’s and those who have given them a Mother’s love and support and cared for them over the years.
Further details please contact Jen Benson 02 4952 6279.
