St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 15 October 2017

Well, it’s good to be back with the St John’s community. I look forward to seeing you all this weekend. Many thanks to Fr Ken, Rob, Mark and Rev Dan Connor who led services in my absence. I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Fr John Brooker who passed away over the holidays. Fr Ken took the funeral service in my absence. Fr John was a gentle, generous and warm-hearted man. I appreciated his willingness to serve our parish and the warmth, the wisdom and the understanding that he always displayed. The prayers of our parish will remain with Beth and all of their family. We trust in the unbreakable love that God has for John and for us all.

Blessings, Murray

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Saturday 14 October 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

St John’s 1K Club update!

I have some exciting news to share with you! We launched the St John’s 1K Club at the end of June this year. Our aim was to raise 60K ($60,000) over two years to support much-needed building repairs and restoration in the church and the church hall.

I am delighted to let you know that our pledges have reached our 60K target! On behalf of the parish council, who approved and encouraged this project, I offer a huge thank-you to all who have been able to support this project. Many thanks to those who donated lump sums to the National Trust account, and to those who have pledged to donate smaller amounts over the course of two years to complete this project. Thanks to the Guild for their support, and to the people who have used their imagination, their time and their energy to create fundraising events to support the 1K Club.

We have engaged a heritage architect and a company of hydraulic and civil engineers to oversee this project. The heritage architects have produced an overall design that has been approved by the Heritage Council of NSW. The engineers will be doing calculations to design the new guttering and downpipe system to replace the current inadequate gutters and drainpipes on the church and hall. Over the next few weeks, we will have surveyors taking detailed levels across the churchgrounds, to assess how we can effectively get water away from the church and the hall, to stop it being sucked up into the walls and causing further damage. I will be sharing further details and updates as we get further into the project. Once again, many thanks to all those who have committed to support the 1K Club so far.

If you haven’t yet had a chance to donate to this, please don’t think that it is too late to! These kind of projects often have extra work that needs to be done that is only discovered as the work progresses. We would value continuing contributions to the 1K Club. All of the details are available on our website and available in church as well.

Christmas Pudding Making – volunteers needed!

Each year, the St John’s Guild make a number of puddings for sale at Christmas time and a they also donate some to be given to sailors in port on Christmas Day through the work of the Mission to Seafarers.

The work to prepare these delicious puddings begins long before Christmas, though! On Mondays 16th and 23rd October the Guild would love you to join them from 8.00am to help make the puddings. This usually takes all morning but even if you only have an hour to spare, that would be a great help for them. Please speak to a Guild member to find out more, or contact us through www.saintjohns.com.au/contact
