St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 3 September 2017

This is an exciting weekend for St John’s – it’s the weekend away for the Youth Alpha that has been running this term. Alpha is a 10-week discussion group based around some of the fundamental questions that people ask about the Christian faith. We are expecting this to be a great time of discussion, so please pray for Rob, Ruth and Mark and all the youth heading to the Alpha Weekend Away.

Blessings, Murray

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Wednesday 30 August 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

Democracy Sausage – Saturday 9 September 2017

Newcastle Council elections will be held Saturday 9 September 2017. To help raise funds for the church restoration, we will be holding a BBQ on the day from 7:30am to about 1:30pm. The plan is to have a roster by 2-hour slots so that it does not impose upon any individual’s day, but allows us to capture the peak voting times.

We will require help on the BBQ, someone to serve customers, and a spare hand to restock supplies if it looks to be more successful than expected! We will only require 10 people or so across the morning to make this work.

Not only will this help raise valuable funds for our church, but it is also a great way to connect better with each other and to reach out to our local community.

If you can help, please email or call Paul Youman. E: paul.youman@ghd.com or mobile: 0437 370 783

Guild Election Day Stall

The Guild will be holding a stall on Election day, Saturday 9 September, from 9am-12md.

We are planning to sell cakes, slices, etc, jams and pickles and any sewing or crafty things.

We would really appreciate some help to stock this stall.

Goods can be brought to the stall on the day or please ring Jenny Walkom on 0419497392 .

Thank you very much.

Water Music with a Bach Infusion – Sunday 10 September 2017

Join us at 3pm on Sunday 10 September for a delightful concert with the renowned violinists Elizabeth Holowell and Peta Dries, and a string ensemble conducted by David Banney. The afternoon will feature the music of Bach and Handel.

Entry will be by donation and all funds raised will be donated to the restoration project to protect against water damage to the church and hall walls – hence the title of ‘Water Music’!

Please come along to enjoy this wonderful concert and raise much-needed funds to complete the work of the St John’s 1K Club.

Keeping children and vulnerable adults safe

A really important part of our ministry here at St John’s is keeping children and vulnerable adults safe as part of our community.

The two basic ways we do that are: Working With Children Checks, and Safer Churches Training.

1. The Working With Children Check (WWCC) is a history check through a person’s national government and employment records and it flags people who might cause concern if they were allowed to work with children. In NSW, a WWCC is a requirement for people who work or volunteer with children.

2. Safer Churches Training is another basic part of our effort to keep safe. It involves a one-day course to start with, with regular half-day refresher courses. The list of upcoming courses is found through the Diocese of Newcastle website at: http://newcastleanglican.org.au/mission-ministries/safe-ministry-training/ . We require volunteers to complete this training, but we strongly recommend that all parents and people with a passion to keep St John’s safe undertake this training. It’s an excellent resource for all parents who are concerned about the safety of their children, whatever institutions and groups they are associated with.

We have a new page on our website at http://www.saintjohns.com.au/children to provide easy links for you to be involved with a Working With Children Check or Safer Churches Training. There is a form there from the Diocese that we need volunteers to use. This form makes sure we get all the information we need to complete the checks that we need to do. Rob has been emailing all volunteers who we need this information from, so if he has emailed you about this, please respond to him as soon as you can!

Lost Property!

The lost property department has recently had some lovely additions of children’s clothing. This year’s range includes clothes for boys and girls, and features shoes, hoodies, and a range of jackets. Items will be available for rescue for the next few Sundays, so please check out the lost property collection in the Hall as soon as you can!
