St John’s Weekly Bulletin – Sunday 2 April 2017

I just want to say a big thank-you to Penny and Amanda for organising the Hollywood Trivia Night fundraiser on Saturday 25 March. It was great that we could enjoy such a great fundraising event and it was obvious how much people enjoyed it!

If you have an idea for fundraising for our churches needs, please let me know. It would be great to have more events like this to raise funds and build connections with our local community.

Blessings, Murray

This bulletin was emailed to members of the parish on Saturday 1 April 2017 – if you would like to join the Weekly Bulletin email list, please call the church office on 02 4927 5399 and we will happily arrange this.

Mission Giving

Each year parishes are asked to set an amount for their Mission Target, parish council has agreed that our target for 2017 will be $7,000: $5,000 to ABM’s Adult Literacy Program in PNG and $2,000 towards the work of the Mission to Seafarers in the Port of Newcastle. There are a number of ways you can support our mission target, for those parishioners who use duplex envelopes something in the “Beyond the Parish” side of the envelope. For those who give their church offering online, you can make an additional online offering marked “Missions” or you could put something in a plain envelope and mark it “Missions” and put it on the offering plate.

During Lent envelopes will be available as extra Lenten Giving for the work of ABM, to assist projects that need extra financial support.

Please continue to pray of the work of ABM and the Mission to Seafarers.

Keeping children and vulnerable adults safe

A really important part of our ministry here at St John’s is keeping children and vulnterable adults safe as part of our community.

The two basic parts ways we do that are: Working With Children Checks, and Safer Churches Training.

1. The Working With Children Check (WWCC) is a history check through a person’s national government and employment records and flagging people who might cause concern if they were allowed to work with children. In NSW, a WWCC is a requirement for people who work or volunteer with children.

2. Safer Churches Training is another basic part of our effort to keep safe. It involved a one-day course to start with, with half-day refresher courses. The list of upcoming courses is found through the Diocese of Newcastle website at: http://newcastleanglican.org.au/mission-ministries/safe-ministry-training/ . We require volunteers to complete this training, but we strongly recommend that all parents and people with a passion to keep St John’s safe undertake this training. It’s an excellent resource for all parents who are concerned about the safety of their children, whatever institutions and groups they are associated with.

We have a new page on our website at http://www.saintjohns.com.au/children to provide easy links for you to be involved with a Working With Children Check or Safer Churches Training. This page can be found under the “Kids, Youth and Families” tab on our website homepage.

St John’s Women’s Guild – first Monday of each month at 9.30am

St John’s Women’s Guild meets in the church hall at 9.30am on the first Monday of each month. The Guild is a group of women who support the ministry of our church by fundraising throughout the year. Last year, that fundraising supported General ministry, Youth ministry, Church restoration, the purchase of new equipment for the hall, and donations to our Mission target, the Samaritans and the Mission to Seafarers. New members are most welcome.

Communion in homes and hospitals

One of the ministries that we love to offer here at St John’s is a service of Communion in people’s homes when they are unable to make it to church.

So if you aren’t able to make it to church – if you are in hospital, if you are temporarily housebound through physical illness, are suffering from depression, have mobility problems, whatever – we would love to come and share the Eucharist with you. It doesn’t need to be a long visit, but we are always happy to come.

Please contact Murray on 02 4927 5399 if you would like to be visited at home or in hospital, or if you know someone who would like a visit.
